| Technology Brief |
Italian energy group Eni SpA (BIT:ENI) has secured EUR 500 million (USD 580.1m) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to upgrade its Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery in the Italian province of Pavia to produce hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuels.
The 15-year loan will be used to convert selected units of the site into a biorefinery, which is expected to start producing HVO diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as of 2028. The project targets an output of around 550,000 tonnes per year.
Specifically, the initiative envisages the conversion of the refinery’s Hydrocracker (HDC2) unit using Ecofining technology developed by Eni in partnership with Honeywell UOP. It also includes the construction of a pre-treatment plant for waste materials like used cooking oils and animal fats, as well as waste from the agri-food industry, which comprise the main feedstock used by Eni’s biofuels subsidiary Enilive to produce HVO biofuels.
