Technology Brief The ONYM Group operates a pre-commercial showcase intermediate pyrolysis plant within an industrial facility located in Montréal-Est, Quebec, Canada. The plant has been in production since fall 2024. It is the second facility developed by the company, following a first demonstration unit operated from 2016 to 2019 (See Pyrobiom Énergies description). The process is based on ONYM Group’s patent pending intermediate pyrolysis technology: a horizontal auger-type screw reactor operating at approximately 500°C and atmospheric pressure, using preheated steel balls as the heat transfer medium. The feedstock consists of Forestry and urban pruning residues (woody biomass) dried prior to processing. The plant simultaneously produces three marketable products: dry pyrolysis oil, biochar and wood vinegar. It also generates non-condensable gases, that are fully valorized within the process to provide part of the thermal energy required for the process. ONYM Group is also developing its first commercial-scale plant (10 dry t/h nominal capacity), to be located south shore of Montreal.
